For Indian passport holders, Russia visa process involves the following steps,

  1. Document Preparation: Preparation of documents (refer the below checklist for more details) usually takes around 5 to 6 days.

  2. Submission: The documents shall be submitted to the Embassy in person or through a third party. If third party is handling the submissions, there must be an authorisation letter as well. There are no finger print scanning involved.

  3. Processing: Embassy officials will start the approval process with the review of your documents. It usually takes around 10 working days for the whole approval process.

  4. Despatch: The stamped passports will be couriered to you directly, or to the address that you’ve requested it to. Usually, the duration of the entire process is about 15 to 20 days, including the despatches. However, during the peak travel months, this could go up to 30 working days.

Summary: To summarise, the tourist visa processing for Russia is a quite straightforward one while the business viss processing is a bit more complex and tedious one. It’s best to initiate the process at least 45 days prior to the travel date, to be able to accommodate any unforeseen delays.

Covering letter - to be addressed to The Embassy, located at Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai or New Delhi, based on the jurisdiction, mentioning the duration of visit, purpose, expenses, details of all applicants with their names, employment details and passport numbers. The address in cover letter should match with the consulate of jurisdiction.

  5. Tourist confirmation letter stating that the host of the tour is by a Russian travel company that is authorised to arrange tour operator business and is also registered in the Unified Federal Register of Tour Operators, having a unique reference number (MVT). The letter from the travel company must have the following information of the applicants - name in full, date of birth, gender, nationality, passport number, date of arrival, date of return, duration of stay, number of entries needed, full title of the Russion tour operator, sealed & signed by the head of the travel company.

  6. Flight tickets, for onward & return

  7. Hotel confirmation vouchers, for all the nights, with the hotel name, address, telephone number and email ID, along with the payment receipts

  8. Visiting card of the applicant

    1. Invitation for the entry to the Russian Federation issued by the Federal Migration Service of the Russian Federation (original + copy); OR

    2. Visa directive sent by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation; OR
    3. Letter of invitation (original + copy) from one of the following national associations of manufacturers and entrepreneurs hosting the visitor,
      1. Chamber of Commerce and Industry of the Russian Federation (CCI of Russia)
      2. All-Russian public organization "Russian Union of Industrialists and Entrepreneurs" (RSPP)
      3. All-Russian public organization of small and medium enterprises “OPORA RUSSIA”
      4. Non-profit organization "Russian Union of Manufacturers (Employers)"
